“马路”之称的来历有两种说法。18世纪末,工业的发展对交通运输的要求愈来愈高,昔日那种“人走出来的路”不再适应社会的需要,英国人约翰·马卡丹设计了新的筑路方法,用碎石铺路,路中央偏高,便于排水,路面平坦宽阔。后来,这种路便取其设计人的姓,称为“马卡丹路”。19世纪末,修建“马卡丹路”的方法传到中国,
The origin of the name “road” has two arguments. At the end of the eighteenth century, the development of the industry demanded more and more transportation. In the past, the kind of “people out of the road” was no longer adapted to the needs of society. The British John Macadamian designed a new approach to road construction. Paving with gravel, the center of the road is high, easy to drain, and the road is flat and wide. Later, this road took the name of its designer, known as “Makadan Road.” At the end of the 19th century, the method of building “Macadam Road” was passed to China.
