Casing directional drilling equipment and processes were designed and tested in the North Sea oilfield. If the cost of equipment testing in the North Sea is extremely expensive, the test was moved to a drilling test site near Cameron, Texas. Testing required speed, gravity and fluid conditions such as a wide range of well deviation from vertical to horizontal. To reduce the risk of casing directional drilling, one wellbore integrated section was found to be complex with wells drilled by 103 / 4in and 73 / 4in casing on the El-dfiskB platform off the Norwegian coast. The ground equipment used in the field test is also the same as the rig adjustment equipment in Norway and references the procedures necessary for directional drilling in Norway’s EldfiskB platform. Safety and training are also an integral part of this project.
