OBJECTIVE: To detect visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to find out the degree of visual center impairment and related factors. Methods 30 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and 30 matched healthy and age-matched normal subjects (control group) were examined by NicoletViking IV electromyography / evoked potentials. Visual evoked potentials were detected by SPSS statistical software The differences of VEP parameters between the two groups were compared by t-test and linear correlation analysis, and the relationship between VEP parameters and duration of disease, blood glucose, blood lipid and renal function were analyzed. Results There were abnormalities in 20 cases (66.7%) in DM group. Compared with control group, P100 latency was significantly longer (F = 14.417, P <0.01). There was no significant difference in amplitude between two groups (F = 2.886, P> 0.05). Changes in VEP parameters in DM group were associated with impaired glucose and renal function (t = 3.7069, r = -0.370, χ2 = 4.00, P <0.05). Conclusion VEP detection can reflect the early patients with visual center lesions. Control of blood sugar, protect renal function is conducive to reduce the damage of the visual center of patients.
