僮族是我国少数民族中人口最多的一个民族。它在历史上曾有过很高的文化,但在旧社会中由于反动统治阶级的摧残,得不到发展,在中国共产党的领导下,僮族文化才得到发展的机会,像抹去灰尘的珠子,重新闪出光亮。僮戏,就是在党的“百花齐放,推陈出新”的文艺方针指导下,得到提高与发展,成为祖国百花园的新品种之一。很早的时候,在广西僮族地区中就流传一种颂神、祷福、带有迷信意味的“师公戏”。这种戏有舞蹈的形式,也有唱、做及故事情节,但多是表演一些神鬼的故事。唱腔还未得到发展,只是接近于朗诵式的,只能配打击乐,管弦乐不能配上。这种形式曾经在僮族地区传播了几百年,应该说是比较古老的僮戏的一种。
