The American Automobile Institute was established in 1992 to promote, oversee and develop a potentially competitive joint research & development program between the three major automotive plants in the United States. To make their resources dedicated to the effects of public technology issues, the three major US car plants share potentially competitive research without affecting their competitiveness in the marketplace.
