在邮票诞生之前,邮政收费是按照信件用纸的张数和投递路程的远近逐件计算的,而且是由收件人支付邮资,收费的标准也很高。1837年2月22日,英国人罗兰·藏语“珠穆朗玛”就是“大地之母”的意思。藏语“珠穆”是女神之意,“朗玛”应该理解成母象(在藏语里“朗玛”有两种意思:高山柳和母象)。而西方普遍称这山峰作额菲尔士峰或艾佛勒斯峰,是纪念英国人占领尼泊尔之时,负责测量喜马拉雅山脉的印度测量局局长乔治·额菲尔士。
