One M-type cathode has two life-limiting factors: one is a decrease in impregnant and the other is degradation of the surface coating. For the former, the best working temperature and lifetime for the cathode current density are obtained. Second, by comparing these measurements and theoretical calculations, the quantitative temperature dependence of the service life of the surface coating was determined.
