Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), first discovered in the 1970s, is predominantly stored in alpha particles of platelets and released when platelets are activated. Both TSP-1 and TSP-2, members of the same family, have type I repeat units and have an anti-angiogenic effect in the tumor microenvironment, while family members TSP-3, -4 and -5 do not possess such structure and function.
