The distribution of Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) in the rat model of gentamicin (GM) nephrotoxicity, bursting nephritis and normal control group was examined by peroxidase-peroxidase (PAP) method. The results showed that under normal circumstances, THP is a glycoprotein excreted by renal distal tubule epithelial cells. THP can deposit in the interstitium after injury of renal tubules, which may be caused by urine reflux and extravasation . The amount of interstitial THP deposition appears to be related to the degree of tubule damage, but not with the inflammatory response. Therefore, observing the distribution of THP in the mesenchyme seems to be a morphological marker for determining tubular damage and can be used to estimate the degree of tubular damage in renal disease.
