Teaching English Majors Reading by Enhancing Students' Metacognitive Awareness

The need of enhancing higher order thinking skills of English majors in China has long been addressed by English teachers and researchers in China [1].As the major courses of English majors,English reading classes,including both intensive and extensive reading classes,shoulder great responsibility for enhancing students’ thinking abilities.In this article,after analyzing the problem,the author proposes three tentative solutions to the problem,namely,teaching strategies explicitly,raising students’ metacognitive awareness and diversifying assessments of reading courses.Thereafter,two possible difficulties in raising thinking skills in L2 reading classes will be discussed.
