This article attempts to point out that the so-called “naturalist drama” by modernist playwright Strindberg is actually a kind of “psychic naturalism”, which simultaneously possesses the artistic features of naturalism and expressionism. To illustrate this point, this article examines the background of the creation and theory of the “naturalistic drama” in Strindberg and also gives a detailed explanation of the play “Father”. In support of this argument, the article also compares the paintings of Munch, a painter with a similar background to Strindberg’s creation, in order to show the common psychological state of the modernist artists in the “Anxious Times.”
