The old driver, Yang Zhenan, had a picture of her family’s house, the middle of which was Queen Elizabeth, the United Kingdom, and four ordinary Chinese workers standing on both sides. These workers are all Chinese employees of the British Embassy in China. The photo was taken in October 1986 when the Queen of England visited China. There are more than 100 foreign embassies in Beijing, including the Embassy District in Sanlitun, Ta Yuan and outside Jianguomen. More than 3,000 Chinese workers are employed in these embassies. Sun Zengsen, director of Beijing Diplomatic Service Office, told reporters that according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the area occupied by the embassy is rented or built by the host state of the embassy as its territory. As a result, the high walls or fences surrounding the embassy became the “national boundaries”. It can be said that Chinese employees go to work in other countries every day. They are a little-known occupational group.
