Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of telomerase activity and hTERT mRNA in breast tumor. Methods: The telomerase activity of 48 breast cancer patients, 36 breast hyperplasia patients and 30 fibroadenoma tissues were detected by ELISA-TRAP. The hTERT mRNA expression was detected by RT-PCR. All samples were routinely pathologically examined. Results: The positive rates of telomerase activity in breast cancer, breast hyperplasia and breast fibroadenoma were 89.6% (34/48), 33.3% (12/36) and 26.7% (8/30), respectively The positive rates of hTERT mRNA expression were 91.7% (4 4/48), 36.1% (13/36) and 26.7% (8/30), respectively. Conclusion: The activation of telomerase is closely related to the occurrence of breast cancer. The detection of telomerase activity and hTERT mRNA expression is helpful to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of breast cancer.
