Detailed knowledge of the combustion process is crucial to the continued development of medium-speed diesel engines. This report describes the application and development of electronic and photographic techniques in an 8-inch (203.2 mm) bore diesel engine and a Constant Volume bomb. Using Schlieren photography and direct photography to study the formation and penetration of fuel injection. Proposed to predict the jet of oil and gas in the military. The knowledge gained is used to discuss the improvement of existing engine combustion and its development towards a high average effective pressure engine. Of particular interest is the result obtained on an engine operating at a cylinder bore of 121/2 inches (317.5 millimeters) or less at an average effective pressure of 300 pounds per square inch (21.1 kg kg / cm2).
