云南的地理环境特殊,地势高差悬殊,兼有寒、温、热三带气候特点,为南北植物迁移、繁衍提供了良好的条件,加之,云南的许多地方未遭受或仅轻微遭受第四纪冰川袭击,各地质时期发生的不少古老植物皆能在这里发现,植物资源十分丰富,在植物系统中的许多科、属常常是在这里起源或是它们的现代分布中心。茶树隶属于山茶属(Genus Camellia),该属共有200余种,集中分布在我国南部和西南部,尤以云南和广西最多。在山茶属的山茶亚属[SubgenusThea(L.)Chang]中,由一些亲缘相近的茶种组成了茶组(Section Thea),茶组中各茶种的叶片中一般都含有与茶(C.sinensis)相类似的代谢物质,如咖
