The Manchester Canal Company of the United Kingdom worked with Cotte and Pedlar of London and the Fluid Engineering Institute of the British Hydraulics Research Institute as consultants to design, develop and deploy a new barrage on the Canal Lock at the Manchester Canal to prevent the ship from impacting Gates. This type of barge enables vessels within 20,000 tons to stop within 14 meters at a speed of close to 3 knots. Barges use large hydraulic cylinders that stand upright on either side of the lock. British Hydraulic Research Association is responsible for the design, development and supply of hydraulic cylinder facilities. Shipped in Manchester
