陈独秀(1880-1942),安徽怀宁(今安庆市)人,字仲甫,早年留学日本,辛亥革命前后回国,在上海编《国民日报》,1915年9月在上海创办《青年杂志》(从第2期起改为《新青年》),鼓吹新文化,提出民主和科学的口号,是“五四”运动领袖之一。1917年任北京大学教授,文科学长。1918年和李大钊创办《每周评论》,宣传社会主义,信仰马克思主义,猛烈攻击中国封建文化,成为新思想最著名的代表人物。1920年8月,在共产国际的协助下,建立了中国第一个共产主义小组——上海共产党发起组。随后,又指导建立各地共产主义小组。1921年7月中国共产党成立到1927年8月,连任党中央书记、第一次国内革命战争后期,在共产国际及其代表的影响下,中国共产党以他为代表,形成右倾投降派,放弃党对农民、城市小资产阶级、中等资产阶级的领导和对武装力量的领导权,使革命遭到失败。1927年被撤销总书记职务后,成为取消主义者,建立反党组织,1929年11月被开除出共产党,后病逝在四川江津。
