Scalar diffraction theory is the earliest theory used to analyze the readout optical field of optical disks. It uses scalar functions to describe the optical field. It is relatively simple to calculate and understand the readout process. It has been playing a fundamental theoretical role in the development of CD-ROMs (CDs and compatible classes). This paper summarizes and compares some scalar diffraction theories since 1970, and focuses on the model of disc information symbols and scalar diffraction analysis methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are reviewed. Suggestions are put forward on how to quantitatively describe the limitations of scalar diffraction theory in the analysis of high density optical disks.
