在1953年12月美国总统艾森豪威尔向联合国大会提出他引人注目的“原子用于和平”建议的前一年,两起独立的事件勾画出世界前进的方向。①1952年11月,美国在比基尼岛西部的埃尼威托克试验场爆炸了一枚10.4兆吨的氢弹。这枚热核武器破坏了一个岛屿,留下了一个175英尺深的弹坑。它的威力是第二次世界大战期间使用的原子弹的好几百倍,预示着多国核军备竞赛的来临。
In December 1953 the year before President Eisenhower presented his remarkable “Atoms for Peace” proposal to the UN General Assembly, two separate incidents outlined the direction the world was going to move forward. ① In November 1952, the United States exploded a 10.4-megaton hydrogen bomb at the Eniwetok test site in western Bikini. This thermonuclear weapon destroyed an island, leaving a 175-foot deep crater. Its power was hundreds of times that of the atomic bomb used during World War II, heralding the advent of a multi-nuclear nuclear arms race.
