席勒对自由作了一种美丽的阐释:自由不是政治经济权利的自由行使和享受,而是精神上的解放和完美人格的形成,因此带到自由的路径不是政治经济的革命而是审美的教育,至少是须先有审美教育,才有政治经济改革的条件。①根据这一思想,结合席勒对近代人性分裂的分析,对社会弊端的分析,全文提出了对人性层次(感性的人、审美的人、理性的人)的不同观点以及对当代社会的弊端的分析,并且得出从来没有一个时代像我们今天生活的这个时代这样迫切的需要人性的圆满发展的结论。
