湖南商人分为两代。第一代湖南商人,主要是以抢市场为主；第二代湖南商人初步成型,趋于体系。湘中的“扁担经济”“如果你看见一个女孩背着背包,行走在旷野上,可能是美国人,但是如果你看见一个人扛着扁担贩卖塑料制品,可能就是湘中人。”大汉集团副总裁李翔对《中国经济周刊》说。李翔介绍说：“湘中自古以来就是商贾之地。商业的源头叫做铺。绍阳的地名多以铺为名,而湖南商人起源于扁担经济。”
