In 2000, due to the improvement in the production and sales of the semiconductor, automotive, and machine tool industries, the demand for cutting tools in Japan increased for the first time in four years. However, after entering 2001, the demand growth has sluggish. Users strongly demand a reduction in production costs, causing a serious situation for the tool industry. In the face of challenges, Japanese tool companies have generally increased their product development efforts, hoping to expand the market as much as possible, especially to increase the share of overseas markets. At the technical level, manufacturers are vigorously exploring how to better meet the requirements of high-speed, high-precision, high-efficiency, and dry-machining cutting tools. This article describes the recent development trend of the Japanese tool industry and the market strategy of the tool manufacturers.
