Objective To investigate the changes of the diameter of the internal jugular vein after functional neck dissection and its related factors. Methods Forty patients with oral and maxillofacial cancer were enrolled. All the patients underwent resection of the primary lesion and ipsilateral functional neck dissection. The patients underwent spiral CT before surgery, 3 months and 6 months after operation. Jugular vein diameter conditions. Results The average diameter of internal jugular vein in patients with oral carcinoma was (15.4 ± 3.8) mm and the average diameter of internal jugular vein at 3 months after operation was (11.7 ± 5.1) mm. The average diameter of internal jugular vein at 6 months after operation was ( 14.3 ± 4.1) mm. The average diameter of internal jugular vein at 3 months after operation was significantly lower than that of preoperative internal jugular vein (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in average diameter of internal jugular vein at 6 months after operation compared with that before operation. Conclusion Functional neck dissection temporarily reduces the diameter of the retained internal jugular vein and has little effect on the prognosis and quality of life of the patients.
