钙网蛋白是位于内质网上的重要的Ca~(2+)结合蛋白,参与多种细胞功能。来自不同物种的钙网蛋白氨基酸具有相似性,提示该蛋白在功能上是保守的。近年研究发现人和猴的钙网蛋白是RNA结合蛋白,其结合RNA的活性依赖于磷酸化过程。推测钙网蛋白RNA结合活性可能也在细胞代谢中起重要作用。为了证明钙网蛋白RNA结合活性是该多功能分子的一基本特性,同时在进化上、功能上存在保守性,作者选择了与多细胞生物体亲缘关系较远的单细胞生物——利什曼原虫的钙网蛋白进行研究。
Calreticulin is an important calcium-binding protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum and participates in many cellular functions. Calreticulin amino acids from different species are similar, suggesting that the protein is functionally conserved. Recent studies have found that human and monkey calreticulin is an RNA-binding protein whose binding RNA activity depends on the phosphorylation process. It is speculated that calreticulin RNA-binding activity may also play an important role in cellular metabolism.
