Edible wild plants in rural Africa provide a diverse range of nutrients for people’s daily diets, including vitamins and minerals, and also play an important role in food deprivation. This article discusses the use of wild foods (or wild edible plants) in the semi-arid West African region and presents the results of research on the use of edible wild plants in northeastern Nigeria. Through the exchange with the local farmers and herdsmen, a total of 67 kinds of wild foods were identified, and these foods came from 53 kinds of plants. The level of understanding of wild foods can vary depending on the original ethnicity of the area and the gender of the inhabitants. Some wild foods can have side effects if they are oaten in excess. The changes in land use caused by the expansion of agricultural production seem to be expanding the area of common areas for wild foods. Wild foods form an important supplement to people’s daily diet and play a crucial role in food deprivation. If sold after acquisition, they also provide the opportunity to increase revenue. This article argues that wild food is an important means used by rural communities to earn a living. The paper also argues that further research is needed to determine whether local public institutions and community-based natural resource management systems are capable of protecting those resources.
