For the first time, a new prestressed concrete bridge was built in Düsseldorf, West Germany. The prestressing tendon is not an ordinary steel bar and uses a rod glass fiber composite material (HLV) under the trade name Polystal. This material consists of fine glass fibers and is glued to a stick or other shape with synthetic resin. For the construction of this small prestressed concrete bridge, approximately 100 rods of 7.5 mm in diameter were used to produce 12 prestressing tendons. The breaking stress per rod is 7t, which is equivalent to the strength of high quality prestressing steel. The project is part of a collaborative research project conducted by the West German Research and Technology Corporation and the two companies. Its purpose is to find a can effectively prevent the traditional prestressed concrete corrosion damage
