妙玉因病而出家,且带发修行,对饮茶有特殊喜好,这是她明显与众不同的地方。在佛教界有许多这样的先例,即出家之后身体恢复了健康。僧人出家是必须剃发的,妙玉带发修行应是其家庭施加了影响以及妙玉个性的使然,尼姑庵本着治病救人、慈悲为怀的目的做了妥协。从叙事的角度,带发修行为塑造妙玉的良好个人形象以及与宝玉的感情纠葛埋下伏笔。中国僧人有饮茶的传统,但妙玉过于执著,不能超脱,表明妙玉虽身在佛门,但并没有真正走入佛门,在佛门也只是权宜之计。
