Women’s political participation is an important symbol of women’s political liberation and gender equality. It is also an important measure of political democracy and social progress. After the Meiji Restoration, although Japanese women acquired limited rights in the fields of education, economy and law, they did not have the right to vote or to stand for election. Under the long-term shackles of feudal ideology, the concept of political participation is weak and their responsibility is to be virtuous and wives and mothers. After the war, Japanese women finally gained the right to participate in the trend of democratic reform. After a long period of hard work, Japanese women today have become pivotal forces in the political activities of the country.
