An overview of the microalloying elements vanadium, titanium and niobium in the production of low alloy high strength structural steel plays an important role. Although these elements are added in small quantities, they can obviously improve various properties of the steel (such as increasing the strength, hardness and toughness, and correspondingly reducing the weight of the structure) to meet the needs of various components for different applications. In combination with abundant resources of vanadium, titanium and niobium from Panzhihua Iron and Steel Group in China, the favorable conditions, necessity and prospect of developing low alloy high strength structural steel are pointed out.
