In the western traditional humanistic thought, death as the opposite of existence has irreplaceable meaning and value. Many outstanding humanities writers make life care of individuals through the narrative of death in their works. In Hardy’s tragic novels, characters are often shrouded in a pessimistic, decadent, desperate modern consciousness, self-restrained, and only death can help them get out of their shackles, realize themselves and gain freedom. Hardy uses the narrative of “protective death” to let people feel death while enjoying the value of life and human dignity.
