Ampullary tumors should be surgically resected due to their high malignant rate. Given the low accuracy of preoperative endoscopic biopsy, there are still controversies about which surgical protocol to use such as duodenal or pancreatoduodenectomy. The authors studied the safety and long-term efficacy of local duodenal resection (TDE). The Michigan Medical Center performed TDE for 21 cases of ampulla adenoma from 1991 to 1998.
