In order to obtain accurate values of trace amounts of thorium in rock or other complex materials, thorium must be completely separated from other elements prior to the final determination by sensitive spectrophotometry. Ion exchange is commonly used when analyzing thorium in silicate rocks and other related complex materials. The method of separating thorium with anion chromatography in nitric acid is widely accepted. In 5-10M nitric acid, thorium is easily adsorbed so that it can be separated from most other elements.
