陈衍晚年编选《宋诗精华录》,鼓吹、宣传宋诗,表达其宗宋而不抑唐的诗学观,为同光体诗人乃至清初以来的宋诗派作了理论总结,也为后来读者阅读宋诗提供了一个高质量的范本。该书的评语与圈点,体现了较为丰富而积极的诗学思想:第一,注重避熟避俗,主张生新求变。第二,推崇吐属大方,感情真挚,不搬弄技巧的诗。第三,提倡论诗亦如乐,须音律协畅,方是好诗。但编者却相对忽略了诸如理、禅及以文为诗这些原本属于宋诗特色的内容。
In his later years, Chen Yan compiled “The Best Song Poems”, advocated and publicized Song Poems, expressed his conceptions of Song without prejudice to Tang’s theory of poetics, and made a theoretical summary of the Song Poetry School with the light poets and even the early Qing Dynasty, Later readers read Song poetry provides a high-quality model. The book’s reviews and punctuations reflect a rather rich and positive poetics: First, pay attention to avoid evasion, advocate innovation and change. Second, respected spit generous, sincere feelings, do not trick skills. Third, advocating poetry is like music, temperament should be smooth, side is a good poem. However, editors are relatively ignoring such as Li, Zen and poetry, which originally belonged to the characteristics of Song poetry.
