关于别雷的生平、创作、《彼得堡》的基本情节等,请参见本辑钱善行先生《一部被冷落多年的俄罗斯文学名著》一文。这里要特别指出的是,《彼得堡》虽然有比较完整的故事情节,有十分严肃的主题——沙皇统治下的彼得堡的覆没——,但是作者的叙述风格、叙述视角是异常独特的,作者借用了俄罗斯古典文学名著中不少著名的人物形象与情节,把它们置于1905年俄国第一次资产阶级民主革命的背景下加以改造,并作变形、夸张处理,使它们负载上新的寓意和内涵;作品自始至终笼罩着一种亦真亦幻、亦庄亦谐的气氛;作者的笔触不懈追寻的是意识的流动;意识,人的意识,影子的意识,成为作品的主体,难怪作者把《彼得堡》称作“大脑的游戏”。小说除序幕与尾声外共八章,约合中文45万字,译者选译的是第一章的前八节和第八章全部,译自苏联科学出版社1981年出版的《彼得堡》一书。本辑作品还收入了别雷写的一篇《作家自述》,这篇自述作于1933年,即作者去世前一年,可以把这篇自述看作作者对自己文学生涯和创作实践的简短回顾与总结。自述译自苏联作家出版社1988年出版的安德列·别雷《创作问题》专集。译文中的标点和格式基本按原作处理,所选插图均为小说作者亲笔所作。
