In the early 1980s, I once taught a language in a primary school in Beijing. The tentative text, called “Sendai,” was selected from “Mr. Fujino” by Lu Xun and compiled in a textbook for senior students. The trial was designed to explore a question: What exactly is Chinese teaching? Now that nearly 10 years have passed since the beginning of this decade, there has been a great deal of change in the teaching of primary schools in the past 10 years. However, it seems necessary to re-think carefully and reiterate it in the past. Not for nostalgia. I remember during the days before the trial, I read an article written by an American in the British edition compiled by the Bureau of Foreign Languages titled “China’s textbooks remain the same for fourteen years ”. This “fourteen years” refers to 1964-1978.
