In the novel “Asphalt Boy,” Morrison explores the issue of African-American culture through the love and separation of his son and Jean. The combination of the two symbolizes the mutual attraction of the two cultures; the separation of the two symbolizes the conflict between the two cultures. So, in the cracks in the black how to choose? Adhere to the black tradition or to cater to white civilization? Morrison’s emotions are clearly more inclined to Jean. Though she left her son, the memory of the black culture evoked by him remained in the depths of her consciousness. It can be said that Jean is more hopeful to go a new path than his son who returns to Thorns. In this way, Morrison returned to her usual assertion: While adhering to the traditional black culture, it actively integrated itself into modern American society.
