The impact of digital computation in seismic exploration has been the most dramatic in recent years. More than 40% of the $ 544 million spent worldwide for seismic exploration in 1972 was spent on data processing. What is strange, however, is that digital technology, which is so important for interpretation, accounts for a very small fraction of this total. Habits interpreted interpretation as an “art,” reluctant to see some types of new methods inflexible. And many of the computer technologies that can help explain can not yet go completely into production from the stage of exploration. However, some of the rapidly accepted calculations for interpretation, such as seismic models, have entered a phase of explosive growth.
