語言学是以語言为研究对象的一种科学。它在全世界只有一百多年的历史。在我国,大家知道有这門科学,还只是三四十年以前的事情。在旧中国,研究这门科学的人很少,也难以把它推广。中华人民共和国成立之后,由于領导上的重視和实际上的需要,它在这短短的七八年間有了相当快的进步。可是直到現在,各方面对它的誤解还是不少。这些誤解不消除,我想是会妨碍它的健康發展的。現在各方面对于語言学的誤解,就我观察,主要有两个:一个認为語言学是沒有用的,一个認为語言学很难学。認为語言学沒有用的人所持的理由是:現在懂得語言学的人并不很多,絕大多数的人都是沒有学过語言学的,可是他們也一样会說話,会写文章,并不感到有什么缺陷,由此可以証明語言学是没有用的。这种看法,我們追溯起来,可以說是有很长久的历史渊 Linguistics is a science based on language.
