Textiles and clothing have always been China’s important export commodities. In 1996, the export volume was 37.1 billion U.S. dollars, down 2.2% over 1995, with the textile industry down 13.1%, the largest drop in more than a decade. The United States is one of the major markets for China’s textile and garment exports. From January to November 1996, China exported U.S. textiles and clothing in the amount of 6.4 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 1.8% over the same period of last year.
