The original work on Greek and Latin authors on the Far East by Prof.Georges Coedès (1886-1969) was published in French in 1910 under the title Textes d’auteurs grecs et latins relatifs à l’Extr(e)me Orient depuis le IⅣe siècle av.J.-C.jusqu’au ⅪⅤe siècle and it was conceived as the first instalment of a larger work entitled Documents historiques et géographiques relatifs à l’Indochine sponsored and published by the EFEO,which was to be complemented with a similar anthology of texts from Arabian and Persian geographers.This book was Coedès’first scholarly contribution when he was only 24 years old,at the beginning of fruitful professional career in Southeast Asia during which he served as Director of the Vajira(n)(a)ma National Library of Thailand from 1918,and as director of the EFEO ((E)cole Fran(c)aise d’Extr(e)me Orient/http://www.efeo.fr/) in Hanoi,from 1928 until his retirement in 1949.
