Essentialism holds that the interior of things contains an essential view. From the beginning of ancient Greece, it largely dominates the course of thought of western philosophy and gradually becomes a tendency of essentialism. Since the nineteenth century, essentialism has been questioned and criticized in various ways. Essentialists in the field of calligraphy also define calligraphy as an immutable thing and are keen to find some absolute supremacy that has been challenged by historicism (or “relationalism”). There are three types of calligraphy essentialism, each of them has its own characteristics and causes, which have a negative impact on the development of calligraphy. This article has carried on the preliminary analysis and the explanation.
