Complexes of transition metallochlorophyll-a were synthesized from pheophytin-a ( Pheo-a) and the salts of transition metals at the certain solvents and conditions. Their characteristics have been investigated by Fourier transformation-infrared (FF-IR) , ultraviolet-visible ( UV-Vis) , magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and fluorescence spectra. By comparing the spectra of metallchlorophyll-a with those of chlorophyll-a and pheophytin-a, it is demonstrated that the spectroscopic characteristics of these types of metallochlorophyll-a are similar to those of chlorophyll-a but distinct from those of pheophytin-a. All of these prove that porphyrin ring of Pheo-a is coordinated to transition metal ions. Furthermore, the compounds of transition metallochlorophyll-a have better thermostability, photostability and resistance to oxidation than natural chlorophyll-a, as shown from their structural analyses.
