2009年前5个月重点钢铁企业炼铁生产扭转了2008年生产指标下滑的趋势。全国重点钢铁企业高炉燃料比为518 kg/t,比上年下降14 kg/t,入炉焦比为374 kg/t,比上年下降22 kg/t,喷煤比为144 kg/t,热风温度为1158℃等指标均创出历史最好水平。高炉炼铁原燃料供应和质量的改善,是高炉技术改善的主要因素;高炉操作从粗放式转变为精细化,也促进了炼铁技术的进步。目前,中国炼铁技术发展不平衡,是先进与落后共存阶段,尚有年生产能力7500万t的落后小高炉存在,要加快淘汰落后装备的进程,以促进节能减排工作的深入开展,向炼铁强国迈进。
