(一)晚清时期,中国有四大小说家,吴趼人是其中一个,声名且远达国外,其代表作被人公认是《二十年目睹之怪现状》。吴已死去七十多年,除初死时有同乡知友李怀霜在上海《天铎报》(同盟会报刊)写有二千字左右的短传之外,未闻再有其他较详细的传记,本文根据多番调查所得,试作一个生平述略。吴名沃尧,本名宝震(见家谱所载),初字小允,继字茧人,随以同音改作趼人,
