《同情》是李劼人几乎不为人关注的一部中篇小说。从艺术上看,小说尚未在题材和语言之间成功地建立起我们熟悉的“地方志”与“龙门阵”风格,相反,却残留着“五四”日记体小说的随意和散漫,只能算是早期探索阶段的不成熟之作,这自然是它遭到忽视的原因之一。不过,考虑到现代文学对“思想性”的高度偏爱,以及对“艺术性”相应的破例宽容,不少粗糙随意的即兴之作均被“反复收入各种选本”、“被研究者不厌其烦挖掘出多种宝贵精神和意蕴”①的
