滚装轮运输是在60年代开始推广的一种新运输方式。由于这种运输方式与一般货轮的升降装卸方式相比有许多优点;在港口装卸不受天气影响;船舶在码头停泊的时间短;货物破损率低以及减少船上、港口的固定装卸设备等等,近年来的发展十分迅速。我国于1978年引进一艘“南口”号滚装轮,其载重量为5692吨,吃水6.8米,总长度136.19米,船宽20米,是带尾跳板的滚装轮(尾跳板长25米、宽8米、回旋式。由可折迭的尾跳、折跳及挡板组成,用液压绞车通过钢丝绳带动),共有三层装货甲板。主甲板层的货仑高度为4.5米,可以一次装载滚装箱105个(40英尺的101个和30英尺的4个)或集装箱404个(规格8英尺×8英尺6英寸×20英尺)或440辆汽车。目前该轮主要用于运输汽车。
