The United States Geological Survey (USGS), the federal government's largest institute of geosciences, is now empowered to receive privately-funded donations and to work with donors on a number of research projects that support the agency's scientific research and technology development and data systems. However, until the USGS can accept outside donations, the proposed plan must be considered for public benefit and must be considered consistent with the basic mission of the USGS. The mission of the USGS is to assess the nation's land, water, energy and mineral resources and to study ways to define and mitigate disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides.
