郎世宁对满清宫廷最大的贡献,莫过于绘制了大量帝后肖像,为式微的中国肖像画注入了一股新的生机。郎世宁的肖像画作品主要集中在乾隆时期。当时国力强盛,乾隆皇帝本人又好大喜功、十分自恋,非常乐于命宫廷画师为自己和妃嫔画像。乾隆朝时郎世宁已近晚年,绘画技法醇熟,因而留下了不少杰出的肖像作品。在中国的传统绘画中,帝王肖像大多为正面朝服像。画面刻板单一,皇帝表情麻木,不仅毫无特点,且十分僵化。郎世宁也留下过这样的作品,
