During the writing of this article (December), the Glomma Challenger is drilling into unknown strata. On the south side of the Rift Valley in Costa Rica, drill bits have reached more than 1,000 meters into the oceanic crust, reaching an unprecedented depth. For the first time, the transition from Tier 2 to Tier 3 was just one of a series of notable achievements made by the deep-sea drilling program last year. The experience gained in recent years and the improvement in the reliability of positioning and coring systems have played a major role in this success.
