Threatened Asian Automotive Threats In 2003, the total sales of light vehicles in the United States was 16.68 million units, a decrease of one percentage point from 2002, but it was also the fifth highest in the history of U.S. automobile sales. However, under these circumstances, the sales volume of the United States among the “Big Three” all showed a year-on-year decline: GM dropped 2.2%, Ford dropped 4.0% and Dai-Ke dropped 3.0%. In stark contrast, sales of many brands in Asia continued to grow: Mazda saw its strongest growth momentum, reaching 7.9%, with Toyota, Honda and Nissan also up 6.3%, 8.2% and 7.4% respectively. Hyundai from South Korea is the first time exceeded 400,000, more than the German Volkswagen ranked seventh. The market share of U.S. companies in their own homes continued to fall, dropping from 64.5% in 2002 to 63.1% in 2003. The best-selling sedan in the U.S. market is Toyota Camry from Japan, which sold 413,296 vehicles this year. Camry was the best-selling model for 1997-2000 and 2002, and the best sedan sedan for 2001 was the Honda Accord. Japanese-made cars have topped the sales list, contaminating the American car. Prior to this, the sales champion has been monopolized by Ford and Chevrolet. No wonder some U.S. experts think that in the past 10 years the United States has too much emphasis on sport utility vehicles, pickups and small loaves, ignoring the car market.
